The NRA basic Pistol course is designed to introduce the new pistol shooter with the safe use, maintenance, and storage of a handgun.
Similar to the CWP class, We start with the construction of both revolvers and semi-automatic handguns. You will learn the basic use of the handgun; basic target marksmanship techniques; selection, storage, and function of ammunition; and firearms safety procedures.
The NRA Basic Pistol class does not cover any state or federal firearms laws. Thus, it runs about two hours shorter than the CWP course. The differences between the CWP class and the Basic Pistol class is that in the basic class, you will be exposed to the sporting usage of the pistol as opposed to the defensive usage. Marksmanship principals will be based on target shooting, not rapidly acquired targets and fast moving attackers. There is an open book NRA written examination taken at the end of the course.
Firearm selection criteria will be covered so you will know what to look for in a handgun should you desire to purchase one after the class.
Finally, you will participate in a live fire range exercise in which you will become familiar with the techniques of sight alignment and sight picture, and will learn to adjust the sights of the firearm to center the impact of the bullets on the desire point of aim.
You are encouraged to bring your personal firearm to the class, but if you have not yet obtained one, you may use our firearms to become familiar with the makes and models often used. This will allow you to make better decisions on what handgun will best fit your physical size and method of carry.
Successful completion of this course will result in the issuance of an NRA Basic Pistol certificate. It will qualify you to move on to more advance NRA courses, such as the Personal Protection series of courses described elsewhere on the web site
